Alfonso's dream was to be an artist. He earned a spot at a prestigious art school to study as a painter and wood sculptor — until his 2-year-old son was in a serious accident. Without a second thought, he left school and spent the next 8 years working as a custom woodworker to cover his son's medical expenses through multiple reconstructive surgeries. His son eventually recovered. Alfonso set his dream aside for his family, and never complained once.
Years later, Alfonso and his family emigrated from Ecuador seeking asylum after his wife's storefront was looted and threatened by a local gang demanding "protection." They left everything behind for the chance at a safer life. Today, they hold EAD work permits, are gainfully employed, have an active asylum case moving through proper legal channels, and are deeply rooted in their church and the Twin Cities Latino community.
In his free time, Alfie makes incredible artwork — his favorite pieces blend South American techniques with traditional imagery of his favorite state: Minnesota. He's been embraced here in Northeast Minneapolis: Siwek's Lumber donated $2,000+ in hardwood and D&B Hardwoods donated $1,000+ in industrial milling to stock him up and get him creating.
Every dollar from commissions goes directly to Alfonso and his family to help cover their legal fees. Pricing is donation-based, reflecting the time each piece takes to make.
